Meeting with the Mayor of Korca Municipality

“In terms of tourism development, Korça has a very big potential if we think and work towards connecting the dots not only at the local level, but also connect with the bordering regions of North Macedonia and Greece – specifically between Korça, Kastoria, and Thessaloniki.

In terms of structure, the Citizens’ Council – established for the first time within the Municipality and composed of high profiles and tourism experts in Korça – has the mandate to formulate socio-economic development plans and policies like the drafting local tourism strategy. In consultation with stakeholders and citizens, they are encouraged to utilize their expertise to ensure the preparation and implementation of a tourism development plan, the enforcement of standards and the collection of statistical data for tourism purposes. The topic of outdoor and winter sports is also very important for us.” -Sotiraq Filo

During the meeting with the Mayor of Korça Mr. Filo, the project team noted the importance of the “three-country corner” as the greatest potential, interesting and with relevant products that can be offered from a connection of the three cities; Korça, Kastoria, and Thessaloniki. A very important point of discussion was related to the investment and development of a concrete proposal in a ski area. Besides that, products and other offers in the region are important for Korça, such as the equestrian sports, hiking, cycling, etc. Integration and coordination of local and national plans for tourism development is a top priority for all parties, local and central government, stakeholders, and the citizens’ council within the Municipality, which have started working on the tourism action plan for the next 20 years. During the discussion with the Mayor, the focus was on the marketing and product development – enhancing Korça’s image as an “outstanding” safe, secure, and tourist-friendly destination; synchronizing public and private sectors” efforts, but marketing and promotional materials need support. In terms of reliable data, the Mayor explained how the tourist info point is under the management of a civil society organization and survey of guests with data is available.
